Steam versus retail versions?

I need a few opinions, which is better steam or retail for example: oblivion/fallout 3 or farcry 2?

Also, can someone who owns the retail version of a game play online with someone who has the steam version? Such as crysis wars which can be purchased on steam and through retail.Steam versus retail versions?
I prefer buying the retail editions, just because I like displaying the box.

But ultimately, there is no difference. Anyone with a copy of the game, be it retail or Steam, can play online together (provided the game supports online play.)Steam versus retail versions?
Depends. If you buy retail, you have to downloaded patches manually off websites unless the game comes with an auto-patcher. Steam manages all the patching for you but sometimes newly released patches are delayed on Steam while the retail version will be available for you asap. I'd personally recommend buying whichever way ends up cheaper as both are good options.

EDIT: I'm also certain you cannot patch Steam-paid games manually.

Installing mods/maps may be done in a different process though as Steam installs it's games in it's own Program Files directory (as default).

You can cross-platform with Retail and Steam when it comes to playing multiplayer.
